How do I become an SMPS Fellow?

- FSMPS Hopeful

Dear FSMPS Hopeful,

The shortest answer to this question is listen to my webinar “Demystifying the Fellows Process,” which is available on the SMPS Website. What applicants need to understand first is the purpose of the Fellow Program and the responsibilities of the Fellows designation. The purpose is to recognize individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the Society and to the profession of marketing services in the A/E/C industry, and to encourage continued achievement and SMPS engagement by senior members. As a Fellow you have the responsibility to accept leadership roles in the Society and mentoring roles in the profession. You are expected to promote SMPS in all contacts in the industry.

Assuming you are willing to accept the roles, without hesitation, you need to validate if you meet the following Fellow designation requirements:

  1. You must be an active member of SMPS for 10 of the last 15 years (when you apply) and be a member in good standing;
  2. As a marketer or business developer in the A/E/C industry, you will need to show 10 years of experience;
  3. Starting in 2015, you need to have held a CPSM certification for a minimum of 5 years.

Assuming you meet these requirements, there will be five parameters in which each candidate will be evaluated. They are work history, SMPS activities, significant activities, mentorship and endorsements/testimonials.

What’s important is determining when (which year) is the right time to submit your application. The webinar “Demystifying the Fellows Process” is to help you understand when is the right time. Listen to the webinar and if that is not enough, you are welcome to contact me. The process is not intended to be difficult. All you need to do is answer the question, “are you ready?” before you begin. Good luck!
